Glaucoma
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually without pain or early symptoms, and the vision it takes cannot be restored. That is why early detection matters. We use eye pressure testing, OCT scans of the optic nerve and visual field testing to diagnose glaucoma and track it over time. Treatment usually starts with prescription eye drops. If you need laser treatment or surgery, we refer you to a glaucoma specialist.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside your eye. It causes blurry or dim vision, glare and halos around lights, and trouble seeing at night. In the early stages, an updated prescription and anti-glare lenses can help. When cataracts start to get in the way of daily life, we refer you to a trusted surgeon and provide your follow-up care.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
AMD affects the macula, the part of the retina that gives you sharp central vision for reading and recognizing faces. OCT imaging lets us spot early changes before you notice them. We monitor AMD closely, recommend nutrition and lifestyle steps that can slow it, and refer you to a retina specialist if you need treatment.
Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the retina. A yearly diabetic eye exam with retinal imaging can find diabetic retinopathy early, when treatment works best.
Our technology
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to see the layers of your retina and optic nerve
- Digital retinal imaging to document and compare the health of your eyes over time
- Visual field testing to measure your side vision

Frequently asked questions
Can an optometrist treat glaucoma?
Yes. Dr. Berger diagnoses and manages glaucoma, and prescribes glaucoma eye drops. If you need laser treatment or surgery, we refer you to a glaucoma specialist and stay involved in your care.
Is medical eye care covered by insurance?
Visits for eye diseases are usually billed to your medical insurance, including Medicare, rather than your vision plan.
