Signs your child may need an eye exam

Children rarely tell you they cannot see well, because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Watch for:

  • Squinting, rubbing their eyes or tilting their head
  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books near their face
  • Losing their place while reading, or avoiding reading altogether
  • Headaches or tired eyes after school or screen time
  • One eye turning in or out

What a kids’ eye exam includes

We check much more than an eye chart. Your child’s exam looks at how clearly they see far and near, how well their eyes focus and work together, color vision, and the overall health of their eyes. We keep it relaxed and explain each step, so kids know what to expect.

Nearsighted and getting worse?

If your child’s prescription keeps getting stronger every year, ask us about myopia management. Treatment started early can slow how fast nearsightedness progresses.

Glasses kids actually want to wear

Our optical carries durable, flexible kids’ frames in colors and styles they will be proud of, fitted to stay put through recess, sports and everything in between.

What to bring

  • Your child’s current glasses, if they have them
  • Your vision and medical insurance cards
  • Any notes from school or your pediatrician, and anything you or their teacher has noticed

Frequently asked questions

When should my child have their first eye exam?

We see children as young as 3 years old. We recommend children have their first exam between ages 3 and 5, and then yearly once they start school.

My child passed the school vision screening. Do they still need an exam?

Yes. A screening only checks how clearly your child sees across the room. It can miss focusing problems, eye teaming issues and farsightedness that make reading hard. The exam also checks the health of the inside of the eye.

Does my child need to read letters to have an exam?

No. We use pictures, shapes and objective tests, so young children who do not read yet can have a complete exam.

Does insurance cover my child's eye exam?

Most vision plans, including VSP and EyeMed, include a yearly eye exam for children. We check your benefits before the visit.
