When to go to the emergency room

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 for a chemical splash in the eye (rinse with clean water for 15 minutes first), a penetrating injury, or sudden vision loss along with weakness, numbness or trouble speaking.

What to expect

We will examine your eye with a high-powered microscope, find the cause and start treatment, which may include prescription eye drops. If you need a specialist or surgeon, we will refer you to one and make sure you are seen quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Should I go to urgent care or an eye doctor?

For most eye problems, an eye doctor is the better choice. We have equipment urgent care clinics do not, like a slit lamp microscope to look closely at the eye. Go straight to the ER for chemical splashes, serious trauma, or sudden vision loss with other symptoms.

Does insurance cover emergency eye visits?

Urgent eye problems are usually billed to your medical insurance. We accept Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Tricare and most other major medical plans.
