What happens during your exam

A comprehensive eye exam at The Optical Centre checks both how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. It is a digital eye exam: we photograph and scan your eyes, so we can spot changes early and compare them year to year. Depending on your age and needs, your visit can include:

  • Vision and prescription testing for glasses and contact lenses
  • Eye muscle and focusing tests, which matter for reading, screens and driving
  • Eye pressure testing to screen for glaucoma
  • Digital retinal imaging, a high-resolution photo of the back of your eye that we compare year to year
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT), a scan of the layers of your retina and optic nerve that can catch glaucoma and macular degeneration early
  • Visual field testing to check your side vision when needed

Dr. Berger walks you through your results on screen, so you understand what is going on with your eyes and what your treatment options are.

Why a thorough exam matters

Many serious eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, have no symptoms in their early stages. A routine eye exam is often the only way to catch them while they are easiest to treat. Dr. Berger can also spot signs of high blood pressure and diabetes in the blood vessels of your retina.

Glasses, fitted right here

After your exam, our opticians help you choose frames and lenses that suit your prescription, your face and your day, whether that is long hours at a computer, driving at night or working outdoors. See our eyewear.

Who we see

We see adults, seniors and children, from first-time glasses wearers to people managing glaucoma or other eye disease. New patients are always welcome.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an eye exam take?

Plan on 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including time with our optician if you would like to look at frames. Returning patients are often quicker.

How often should I have an eye exam?

We recommend yearly eye exams. Eye disease often has no symptoms. Catching problems early is the best way to keep eyes healthy and prevent vision loss.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Sometimes. Dilation lets the doctor see the back of your eye in detail. In many cases retinal imaging can be used instead, and we will talk about the options before your exam.

Does insurance cover my eye exam?

Routine exams are usually covered by vision plans like VSP and EyeMed and may have a copay. If you have a medical eye concern, such as glaucoma, diabetes or an eye infection, your medical insurance may cover the visit. See our insurance page for details.
