What to expect

Your contact lens exam starts with a complete eye exam. From there:

  • Diagnostic contact lens fitting. Dr. Berger places diagnostic lenses on your eyes to assess how they fit and move. You get to feel the lenses and test your vision with them, far away and up close, before anything is ordered.
  • Help for new wearers. We teach you how to put lenses in, take them out and keep them clean.
  • Adjustments when you need them. If the fit or vision isn’t quite right, we fine-tune your lenses and see you again as needed.

Lenses we fit

  • Daily disposable, two-week and monthly lenses
  • Toric lenses for astigmatism
  • Multifocal lenses for people who need help seeing up close
  • Scleral lenses for keratoconus, corneal scarring and severe dry eye
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses for high prescriptions and irregular corneas
  • Specialty lenses for myopia management in children

Hard to fit? Tried contacts before and gave up?

Many people are told they “can’t wear contacts” when they simply have not had the right lens. If you have keratoconus, a corneal injury, strong astigmatism or dry eyes, specialty lenses like sclerals can provide clear, comfortable vision when nothing else has worked. If your eyes feel dry or tired in contacts, our dry eye treatment can help too.

Caring for your lenses

A few simple habits keep your eyes healthy:

  • Never rinse or store lenses in tap water, and take them out to swim or shower.
  • Use fresh solution every time. Don’t top off old solution.
  • Replace your lenses on schedule, and your lens case every few months.
  • If your eye turns red or painful, take your lenses out and call us right away.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a contact lens exam different from a regular eye exam?

A contact lens sits directly on your eye, so the doctor checks how a lens fits and moves on your eye and how well you see with it. A glasses prescription alone is not enough to order contacts.

Can I wear contacts if I have astigmatism or need readers?

Usually yes. Toric lenses correct astigmatism and multifocal lenses let many people over 40 see near and far without reading glasses.

Where can I reorder my contacts?

You can reorder online through our contact lens portal, linked in the Eyewear menu, and have them shipped to your home.

How often do I need a contact lens exam?

A contact lens prescription is usually good for one year. To keep ordering lenses, most wearers need a contact lens exam once a year.

Can I sleep in my contacts?

Only if Dr. Berger has fitted you with a lens made for overnight wear. Sleeping in regular lenses greatly raises your risk of a serious eye infection.
