Why your eyes need a yearly check
Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults, and it often has no symptoms until it is advanced. People with diabetes are also at higher risk of cataracts and glaucoma. Caught early, diabetic eye disease can usually be treated before it affects your vision.
What we check
Your diabetic eye exam includes a dilated or imaging-based look at your retina, digital retinal photos we compare year to year, and an OCT scan to detect swelling in the macula, the part of your retina responsible for sharp central vision.
Working with your care team
We share your results with your primary care provider or endocrinologist, and if you need treatment from a retina specialist we coordinate the referral. Learn more about diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases we manage.

How often do people with diabetes need an eye exam?
At least once a year, or more often if we find signs of diabetic eye disease or you are pregnant.
Will you send results to my doctor?
Yes. With your permission, we send a report to your primary care doctor or endocrinologist so your whole care team is informed.
Is a diabetic eye exam covered by insurance?
Diabetic eye exams are usually covered by medical insurance, including Medicare.
